Cecidomyiidae

This large family of Bibionomorpha contains nearly 6,500 species (Evenhuis & Pape 2020) with presumably many more awaiting description (Marshall 2012). These tiny flies, or gall midges, are unusually difficult to collect, study and preserve, which could explain why Rondani (1840b, 1843 c, 1848a, 1861a, 1864b, 1867a, 1869c) described only 16 Palaearctic nominal species. Nine are currently considered as valid, four as junior synonyms and three as nomina dubia (Skuhravá 1986, Dahl et al. 1995, Gagné & Solinas 1996, Gagné 2010, Gagné & Jaschhof 2017). Rondani proposed a substitute name for a species previously described and named by himself. Rondani (1876c) also listed a nomen nudum. Gagné & Solinas (1996) attributed a manuscript name to Rondani. Jaschhof (1998) fixed the neotype for Micromya lucorum. Gagné & Solinas (1996) designated a lectotype for Brachineura fuscogrisea Rondani 1840 in the MZUF; Jaschhof (1998) designated a lectotype for Neurolyga fenestralis Rondani, 1840 and Neurolyga silvalis Rondani, 1840, both of them in the MZUF. Except for three species that have presumably been lost, and 13 types (nine syntypes and four paralectotypes) of five species in the OUMNH, the type material has been recovered for all nominal species and is in the MZUF, most of it in poor condition.
