Patterns and trends in country level research collaboration over four decades

The extent of international research collaboration represents an important difference in how science is carried out today, compared to the recent past. This paper has shown that all countries are affected by this internationalisation process, but the intensity differs considerably across nations. Although there is a strong growth for many countries, the relative growth is modest or even negative in some cases.
