Profiling biomedical innovation from patents to research articles: Team structure, research leadership, and topic emphasis

This study mapped large-scale biomedical patents with their cited research articles and took a glance in terms of team structure, leadership, and topic emphases, in the process of biomedical innovation and translation. We expected this study could be a starting point to facilitate visions of science of science and bibliometric indicators to uncover internal mechanisms of innovation in relation to team science.
We anticipate certain future directions of this study. An extreme imbalance exists in both patents and research articles, in which the data of solo industrial/academic teams overwhelm the others. Certain normalization strategies might be required to omit possible negative impacts. We would apply some regression models for validations and robust tests. We can also involve more features in line with team science (e.g., gender and career age) and normalized citation counts for a comprehensive and coherent study.
