Prototyping of the DUNE Vertical Drift TPC
Description
After successful large-scale prototyping campaigns using the two ProtoDUNE detectors, the DUNE collaboration plans to use the proven horizontal single-phase liquid argon (LAr) TPC, based on standard wire-chamber technology, as a baseline technology for its first far detector.
For the second far detector, the collaboration is prototyping a new, so-called “vertical drift” TPC, which aims at combining the best features of both ProtoDUNE technologies: The main novelty of the detector is the anode constructed from 10 m² charge-readout plane (CRP) modules, which in turn consist of a stack of segmented and perforated PCBs, which significantly reduce the complexity of the assembly while maintaining fine-grained tracking and calorimetry performance.
First small-scale prototypes at CERN have shown promising results, and large-scale prototyping is in preparation. This poster will present the design, first results from the prototyping stages and the next steps towards the second DUNE far detector.
