Neutrino Tridents in the NOvA Near Detector

Description

NOvA is a long-baseline accelerator-based neutrino oscillation experiment that measures electron-neutrino appearance and muon-neutrino disappearance using the NuMI beam and a near detector, both located at Fermilab, as well as a far detector, located in Ash River, Minnesota. The high flux of muon neutrinos at the near detector allows for measurement of rare processes such as neutrino trident scattering, a process in which a charged-lepton pair is produced via neutrino-nucleus scattering. This process is allowed by the Standard Model and may also have contributions from new physics. This poster will discuss current estimates of the event rates and detail a signal selection with emphasis on the secondary track in a pair of two muons. It will also show current progress on a track reconstruction method tailored for dimuon events with small opening angles, which is being developed in order to maximize selected events.
