Abstract
Introduction: Inflammation is the protective biological response to harmful stimuli. However, prolonged inflammation can cause various disorders in the body. NSAIDs are the common drugs used to treat inflammation which have some serious side effects. Thus, research have been focused on traditional medicinal system for finding the plants having anti-inflammatory property. In Sikkim Clematis buchananiana and Tupistra nutans have been used traditionally to treat various ailments. Despite their well-known ethnomedicinal properties the evidence based documentation their medicinal property are still lacking.
Objectives: The present study was carried out to investigate ethnomedicinal uses, in-vitro anti-inflammatory property, and phytochemical constituents of Clematis buchananiana and Tupistra nutans.
Methods: The documentation of ethnomedicinal usage was performed by administration of a standard questionnaire and analysed by calculating fidelity level, use value and informant consensus factor. The two in-vitro tests, membrane stabilisation and protein denaturation methods were performed to study anti-inflammatory property. The phytochemicals were screened following the standard protocols.
Results: The ethnomedicinal use of Clematis buchananiana was found to be higher than Tupistra nutans. C. buchananiana was found to be more frequent in use to treat sinusitis, headache, and cold while Tupistra nutans for high blood pressure, diabetes and stomach-ache. Further, both the plants were found to inhibit HRBC membrane and protein denaturation effectively which provides the evidence for their anti-inflammatory property. Moreover, inhibition of haemolysis and protein denaturation by C. buchananiana was found to be higher than T. nutans at all doses which shows its higher potential as an anti- inflammatory agent. The important anti-inflammatory phytochemicals, flavonoids and phenolic were screened in both the plants.
Conclusion: The results provide an evidence-based boosts for traditional knowledge of the usage of C. buchananiana and T. nutans in inflammatory diseases and both the plants possess a good prospect for future drug development.
