Eos: an integrated testbed for hybrid neutrino detection technology
Description
Future ktonne-scale, scintillation-based neutrino detectors, such as Theia, plan to leverage new and developing technologies to distinguish Cherenkov and scintillation signals in order to provide a broad physics program. These hybrid detectors will utilize fast timing photodetectors, novel target materials, such as water-based liquid scintillator (WbLS), and spectral sorting using dichroic filters. Eos is an approximately 4-tonne detector being constructed at Berkeley/LBNL that will provide a test-bed for these emerging technologies for hybrid neutrino detectors. Additionally, Eos will deploy calibration sources to verify the WbLS optical model, which is used to extrapolate to ktonne-scale detectors, and to develop advanced techniques for reconstructing event energy, position, and direction using both the Cherenkov and scintillation photons. After achieving these goals, Eos can be moved near a nuclear reactor or in a particle test-beam to demonstrate neutrino event reconstruction or detailed event characterization within a hybrid detector.
