Delicate Red-nosed Tree Mouse

Taxonomy. J uliomys ossitenuis L. P. Costa et al, 2007, Fazenda Neblina, 1300 m, Parque Estadual da Serra do Brigadeiro, Minas Gerais, Brazil.

This species is monotypic.

Distribution. SE & S Brazil, from Espirito Santo to Rio Grande do Sulstates.

Descriptive notes. Head-body 81-97 mm, tail 102-116 mm, ear 14-17 mm, hindfoot 19-22 mm; weight 14-28 g. The Delicate Red-nosed Tree Mouse is small, with tail longer than head-body length and faintly bicolored, terminating in short tuft. Fur is soft and short, dorsum is dark orange-brown, venter is contrastingly cream white, and nose, rump, and inner pinnae are orange-brown. Dorsal surfaces of hands and feet are covered with pale orange hairs. Chromosomal complement is 2n = 20, FN = 36.

Habitat. Atlantic Forest and semideciduous forests (both Dense Ombrophilous Forest and Mixed Ombrophilous Forest habitats) above elevations of 800 m. A male Delicate Red-nosed Tree Mouse was captured in a linear transect of pitfall traps set in riparian forest along a river c.2 m wide.

Food and Feeding. No information.

Breeding. A lactating Delicate Red-nosed Tree Mouse was collected at the beginning of the dry season in May.

Activity patterns. The Delicate Red-nosed Tree Mouse is nocturnal.

Movements, Home range and Social organization. No information.

Status and Conservation. Not assessed on The IUCN Red List. Most known specimens of Delicate Red-nosed Tree Mice are from protected areas of mature, continuous forests.
