Wikidata as a data collaboration across multiple boundaries

This repository hosts a presentation given on 21 June, 2022, as part of the session "Data Collaborations Across Boundaries" at SciDataCon 2022.

Abstract

Wikidata is a platform that forms the nucleus of both a community and a database that span across disciplinary, jurisdictional, linguistic and other boundaries in the common pursuit of the curation of FAIR and open data to the benefit of humanity as a whole. It takes inspiration from both the "anyone can edit" mindset of Wikipedia and the technical standards developed for the semantic web, and it facilitates collaborative curation - remotely or on-site - between experts and laypeople, between people who do not share a common language and between humans and machines.

Closely integrated with Wikipedia and its sister sites on the one hand and with thousands of scholarly and other databases on the other hand, Wikidata combines open data, open-source software and open collaboration in ways that provide insights into all 8 themes of the session. These themes will thus be used to structure the presentation for a cross-disciplinary and international audience.
