Description
Tamil literary canon reserves a distinct place for ethical writings of which “Naladiyar” is the most significant one. Though both “Naladiyar” and “Thirukkural” seem parallel in their treatment of several virtues, the theme of transience is talked about in a more detailed manner in “Naladiyar”. Reading the “Naladiyar” songs dealing with the theme of Transience in-depth, they are meant to curb the human mind of its evil thoughts and feelings. Only When the theme of human transcience is instilled in the mind, human society will try to indulge in ethical deeds, and will not go against ethics. People will try to detach themselves from internal feelings such as greed for wealth, youth, and body, extreme lust, and egocentricity. Thus, one could shield oneself from these bad psychic qualities and could follow the correct standards of life. “Naladiyar” verses of Transience have been written with such a telescopic view. This paper attempts to explain it with textual evidence.
