INTERACTION OF CHARCOAL WITH CHLORINE WATER

Description

The interaction of charcoal with chlorine water has been investigated. The reaction appears to involve the conversion of chlorine into hydrochloric acid and surface oxidation of charcoal. The reaction is fairly vigorous to begin with, slows down soon after and ultimately stops. The capacity of charcoal to bring about the reaction appears to depend on its capacity to chemisorb oxygen.
