Butt sweep reduced with good container design

Butt sweep can have a major detrimental impact on tree value. This economic loss occurs because of a reduction in volume of clearwood yield. Butt sweep happens when a tree starts to lean, but does not fall over. It generally only occurs after a period of wind-induced tree sway and is almost always associated with root distortion.
