The Theory of Electrophoresis of Liquid Drops

Authors/Creators

Description

The application of the Booth theory of electrophoresis of liquid drops to actual experimental results, as developed in a previous communication, has been extended to Mooney's data for the electrophoresie of Stanolind drops in distilled water and in some electrolyte solutions. Calculation of electrophoretic mobility for different drop sizes in an electrolyte solution of constant concentration, has been carried out for two possible types of charge distribution in the inner fluid, namely the interfacial layer type and the diffuse double layer type. It has been shown that the theoretical equation for the diffuse double layer type of charge distribution reproduces more or less correctly the general nature of the electrophoretic mobility vs. size curve for a suitable choice of the values of \(\zeta\) potential and the ratio of the double layer thicknesses in the two fluids.
