Description

Cymbilabia shanica (Phillimore & W.W.Sm.) Ormerod, comb. nov.

Basionym: Stauropsis shanica Phillimore & W.W.Sm., Rec. Bot. Surv. India 4: 281, 1911. Type:— MYANMAR. Southern Shan State: 2135 m, Phillimore s.n. (holotype: CAL).

Homotypic synonym: Vandopsis shanica (Phillimore & W.W.Sm.) Garay, Bot. Mus. Leafl. 23: 374, 1974.

Specimen examined:— SHAN. Southern part: type.

Distribution:— Endemic.

Note:— Known from only the type collection made over 100 years ago without an illustration that would allow a detailed morphological analysis. It is thus impossible for it to have been included in the molecular study of Liu et al. (2020a). However, the protologue indicated clearly that the species differs from C. undulata (as Stauropsis undulata) merely in its smooth and slightly more slender stems, larger flowers and obtuse sepals and petals. We therefore feel that it is justified to include the species in the genus Cymbilabia. This also makes sense from a phytogeographical point of view, with Cymbilabia occurring in the Himalayas, northeastern India, Upper Myanmar and southwestern China and Vandopsis in Malesia and tropical mainland Asia.
