Description
A survey was developed and administered to incoming students at the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Tucson to assess gaps in LGBTQIA+ knowledge and compare the responses of LGBTQIA+-identifying medical students to non-LGBTQIA+ medical students.
Incoming medical students in 2020 and 2021 (n=64 and n=114) took an entrance survey to assess four pillars related to LGBTQIA+ healthcare: basic knowledge, clinical skills, societal attitudes, and individual comfort. These concepts were assessed, respectively, based on one's self-reported ability to define LGBTQIA+ identity terms, confidence in professionalism in clinical scenarios, importance of including LGBTQIA+ healthcare education in medicine, and personal comfort interacting with members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Students were also asked about their individual identities and career preferences as future physicians.
