Synthesis of a diastereoisometric mixture (±) lilac alcohol(I) has been accomplished through the cyclisation of 2,6-dimethyl-oct-2,7-diene-7-oloate with sodium hydride in benzene followed by reduction with lithium aluminium hydride.
