(RS16) Intake of Calcium and Vitamin D in Patients with Disorders of Amino Acid Metabolism Prescribed with Metabolic Formulas – Are We Giving Enough for Bone Health?

Introduction:
Patients with disorders of amino acid metabolism (AAMD) such as aminoacidopathies (AA), organic acidurias (OA) and urea cycle disorders (UCD) are at an increased risk for bone disease due to a restriction of high protein foods rich in vitamin D and calcium. This retrospective study assessed the adequacy of calcium and vitamin D intake of patients with AAMD receiving dietetic treatment in Hospital Kuala Lumpur, the national referral center for management of these disorders.
Results:
A total of 92 patients age 1-18 years (58% male) were included in the analysis. Most had AA (n=34, 37%), followed by OA (n=31, 31%), and UCD (n=27, 29.3%). Majority of the patients with AA achieved adequate calcium (n=27, 79.4%) and vitamin D (n=20, 58.8%) intake. However, only 48.4% of OA and 40.7% UCD patients achieved adequate calcium intake while only 29.0% of OA and 22.2% of UCD patients achieved adequate vitamin D intake. There was significant association between groups with calcium (p=0.004) and vitamin D (p=0.006) intake.
Discussion/Conclusion:
Patients with OA and UCD showed inadequate intake of calcium and vitamin D. Hence, future intervention should be carried out in order to improve their calcium and vitamin D intake.
