The polarographic reduction of 2-amino-4, 6-dimethyl-5-arylazopyrimidines takes place at azo group in a single 2 electron diffusion controlled wave in the pH range 2.0-10.0. The waves are irreversible and the E1/2 is dependent of pH and on concentration of depolarizer. The plots of E1/2 vs pH are linear with slope 0.062-0.066 V/pH. A plausible mechanism has also been suggested on the basis of number of electrons involved in the reduction process and number of protons involved in the rate determining step. The effect of electron donating and electron withdrawing substituents has been interpreted in the terms of Hammett equation.
