Description
Nigeria is naturally blessed with abundant sources of renewable and non-renewable energy. The development, exploitation and utilisation of these energy sources have been largely skewed in favour of hydro power and crude oil, leaving the other sources either untouched or poorly harnessed. Also the impact of the exploitation of both energy sources on the environment has been largely ignored over the years. In recent years, solar PV installations for street lighting, water pumping, vaccine refrigerators and powering of remote communities (islanding) by use of photovoltaic panels is increasing in some parts of Nigeria. Researches on domestic energy use in different States in Nigeria show that fuelwood is predominantly used in the rural areas while the urban areas mostly use kerosene stove, local gas cooker, local electric cooker, sawdust stove, charcoal stove and firewood as cooking fuels. This paper present a comprehensive review of the literature of domestic energy consumption in Nigeria from desk study of open literature survey approach. The work further analysed the environmental, health and economic implications of the current domestic energy use in Nigeria and also proffers possible solutions.
