Description
The Idiopidae of South Africa is known from six genera and 45 species. To date, no generic
revisions of the Idiopidae of South Africa have been undertaken. For the South African
genera Tucker (1917) recognized the number, size and position of sigilla as being
distinct for each genus. If this is excepted it will result in moving species from Idiops to
other genera. However for this guide the World Spider Catalog is followed. Ctenolophus
Purcell (1904) is an African genus known from six South African species Only one of the
six Ctenolophus spp. are known from both sexes. They have all wide distribution ranges
and is listed as Least Concern with only Ctenolophus pectinipalpis (Purcell, 1903) listed as
Data Deficient. Galeosoma Purcell, 1903 is known from 10 species and three subspecies
all endemic to South Africa. Three species are listed as Endangered and one Vulnerable
and four are Data Deficient. Only two species are known from both sexes. The genus
Gorgyrella is an African genus known from three species and one subspecies endemic to
southern parts of Africa. Two of the species are Data Deficient and only Gorgyrella
schreineri Purcell, 1903 has a wide distribution. The genus Idiops Perty, 1833 is a large
genus represented by 99 species with 23 species and one subspecies known from South
Africa. Seventeen of these species are Data Deficient with 12 species are known from
only one sex. Only Idiops pretoriae (Pocock, 1898) is listed as Vulnerable. The genus
Segragara Tucker 1917 is represented by three species endemic to South Africa. One are
Data Deficient and two have a wider distribution.
