Description

Castiarina allensundholmi Barker, new species (Figs 1 l, 2 b)

Type material: Holotype male, 9.15 km W. Euabalong West railway stn. 33°03’17.3” S. 146°17’42’E. 21.x.03, on flowers of Grevillea sp., A. Sundholm & J. Bugeja, SAMA I 21 701. Allotype female, 4.1 km W. Euabalong West railway stn., 33°03’21.5” S. 146°20’52.2”E. Elev. 173 m, 4.x.03, on flowers of Baeckea, A. Scott, SAMA I 21 702. Paratype female, vicinity of Shepherds Hill, NSW, 33°03’26”S, 146°14’44”, 21.x.03 on flowers of Baeckea, A. Scott, ASSA.

Size. Holotype, 8.2 x 2.7 mm. Allotype, 7.3 x 2.5 mm. Paratype, 7.0 x 2.5 mm.

Description. Colour: Head dark blue. Antennomeres: 1 dark blue; 2–6 blue; 7–11 bronze. Pronotum blue laterally, black with bronze reflections medially. Scutellum dark blue. Elytra yellow with following markings: basal margin dark blue; the following black with blue reflection: two short vittae over humeral callus, post­medial fascia reaching margin, pre­apical mark covering apex and spines, all marks connected along suture, fascia to scutellum broader than pre­apical mark to fascia. Ventral surface and legs dark blue. Setae silver.

Shape and sculpture: Head shallowly punctured, broad median sulcus, mouthparts moderately long. Antennomeres: 1–3 obconic; 4 half­ triangular; 5–11 triangular. Pronotum closely punctured, anterior margin straight, basal margin bisinuate, medial basal fovea extending to anterior margin as impressed line, laterally parallel­sided at base, rounded to widest pre­medially, rounded and narrowed to anterior margin. Scutellum scutiform, few punctures, flat. Elytra punctate­striate, intervals noticeably convex from fascia to apex, laterally angled outwards from base, rounded at humeral callus, concave, rounded post­medially, rounded and narrowed to bispinose apex, spines acute, marginal larger than sutural, margin rounded and indented between spines. Ventral surface shallowly punctured, sparse, short setae. S7 rounded both sexes.

Remarks. I am unable to relate this species to any other.

Distribution. All of the known specimens were collected in the same general area north of the Lachlan River, New South Wales.

Etymology. Named for Allen Sundholm, Sydney.
