Description

Phortica (Phortica) melanopous sp. nov.

(Figs 3–5)

Type material. Holotype ɗ (MNHN): KENYA - labeled “Kakamega equatorial forest, 11.x.2002, S. Prigent”. Paratypes: 2ɗ, same data as the holotype except for 11–23.x.2002 (1ɗ in NMK; 1ɗ in SCAU).

Etymology. A combination of the Greek words: melas and pous meaning black leg.

Diagnosis. Legs dark brown except for yellow on fore and hind knee joints and all tarsi; vertical process of gonopods sclerotized on postero-median and anterior margin, broadened distally, with 1 sclerotized process medially (Fig. 5); aedeagal median rod partly sclerotized, with membranous part bearing several minute warts (Fig. 5); outer membranous tube with numerous, small spine-like pieces (Fig. 5).

Description. Male: Eyes brown. Ocellar triangle black. Frons brown on upper 1/2, black on lower 1/2, with thick dense setae medially. Fronto-orbital plate silvery white. Pedicel and first flagellomere almost yellow; arista plumose, not expanded apically. Face yellow-brown on upper 1/2, dark brown on lower 1/2. Clypeus medially white-yellow, laterally black. Gena and postgena brown to dark brown. Palpus brown basally, grey-yellow distally. Thorax and scutellum orange-brown, with black patches and pollinose pattern. Fore tarsomere V lacking long setae apically. Abdominal tergites I+II yellow medially, black laterally; the rest tergites black. Sternites yellow; III to VI slightly longer than respective width. Male terminalia: Epandrium mid-dorsally constricted, laterally broadened, with dense setae (Fig. 3). Surstylus mostly covered with epandrium, with numerous setae and approximately 20 small prensisetae on ventral margin to inner surface (Figs 3, 4). Gonopods nearly symmetrical (Fig. 5). Paramere short, rod-shaped, slightly sclerotized, apically knobbed, basally recurved with 6–7 sensilla (Fig. 5).

Measurements. BL = 2.95 mm in the holotype (range in 2ɗ paratypes: 2.78–2.90); ThL = 1.40 mm (1.35–1.40); WL = 2.78 mm (2.70–2.80); WW = 1.25 mm (1.10–1.20). Indices: arb = 5/3 (5–6/3), avd = 0.85 (0.80–0.90), adf = 1.10 (1.10–1.20), flw = 1.40 (1.40–1.50), FW/HW = 0.45 (0.45), ch/o = 0.06 (0.07), prorb = damaged (damaged), rcorb = damaged (damaged), vb = 0.45 (0.45), dcl = 0.60 (0.50–0.60), presctl = 0.85 (0.80–0.85), sctl = 1.00 (1.00), sterno = 1.00 (1.00), orbito = 1.75 (1.70–1.75), dcp = 0.23 (0.23), sctlp = 1.20 (1.20), C = 2.40 (2.58–2.61), 4c = 1.25 (1.11–1.21), 4v = 2.25 (2.14–2.47), 5x = 1.19 (1.00–1.19), ac = 2.50 (2.30–2.40), M = 0.65 (0.54–0.68), C3F = 0.64 (0.60).

Distribution. Kenya.
