Carcharhinidae

Description

Carcharhinidae

Carcharhinus falciformis (Müller & Henle, 1839) was questionably recorded from Madeira by Lowe (1839: 18, Carcharias falcipinnis, a questionable synonym of Carcharhinus falciformis); also erroneously stated by Froese & Pauly (2005) to be recorded by Compagno (1984: 470-472), who, however, did not include a record from Madeira. This record needs confirmation.

* Carcharhinus galapagensis (Snodgrass & Heller, 1905) —Galapagos shark

Recorded from Madeira by Compagno (1984: 473-475).

Carcharhinus limbatus (Müller & Henle, 1839) —Blacktip shark

We consider this a very doubtful record.

* Carcharhinus longimanus (Poey, 1861) —Oceanic whitetip shark

* Carcharhinus obscurus (LeSueur, 1818) —Dusky shark

* Prionace glauca (Linnaeus, 1758) —Blue shark

Rhizoprionodon acutus (Rüppell, 1837) —Milk shark

We consider this a very doubtful record.
