Material examined. Female: “ Type ” [in red circle], “2761.” [handwritten], “ Southland ”, “ New Zealand./ Broun coll./ Brit. Mus./ 1922-482.”, “ Promanus subcostatus.” [handwritten]. The specimen deposited in The Natural History Museum, London (British Museum Natural History).

Diagnosis. Largest of the species: body length 8.8 mm; dorsal surface reddish; elytra and pronotum nearly bare, head with pale pubescence; head dorsal surface very coarsely and densely sculptured; antenna 11- segmented, with distinct 3-segmented club; eyes distinctly elevated; gular area transversely wrinkled, with fine punctation along gular sutures only; elytra with four distinct carinae; anterior margin of mesosternum sharply incised; coxitae of ovipositor with distinct pubescence and coxitae smaller than those in P. auripilis; female tergite VIII (pygidium) with evenly rounded emargination of base; sternite VIII shown in Fig. 11.
