Description. Total length: 5.5–12.4 mm. Width across humeral calli: 0.7–1.9 mm. Body red-brown. Habitus of types: Figs 1–3.

Head broader than long, shiny, smooth. Eyes large. Metarostrum and mesorostrum of male slightly grooved longitudinally (Fig. 20). Prorostrum smooth, flattened, 0.32–0.39 as long as head + metarostrum + mesorostrum together. Antennomere 3 as long as broad, conical; following ones broader than long, subcylindrical with a more or less circular row of thin setae; antennomeres 9–10 globose, weakly lengthened, 11th 1.6–1.9 longer than 10th.

Pronotum smooth, shiny. Prosternellum not distinct. Metasternum smooth, slightly depressed in male. Base of elytra almost straight, interstriae 3, 4 and 5–7 forming small raised tubercles at base; interstria 3 large and raised, mostly at apex; interstria 4 larger than 3 in the fore part; interstria 8 beginning before or after the first half of elytra, never reaching the base; interstria 9 projecting rearward and forming the external apical border of elytra. First segment of metatarsi slightly shorter than the two following ones together (Fig. 25).

Sternites III–IV of abdomen slightly laterally carinate, weakly grooved and not depressed in female, the depression deeper in male. Basal notches of sternites V–VI sometimes hardly distinct. Apex of epipleurites VIII: Fig. 29. Spermatheca: Fig. 30.

Remarks. Comparison of type specimens of H. celebensis (Fig. 3) with the type of H. javanus (Fig. 2) and numerous representatives of H. trichemerus (holotype: Fig. 1) shows these three taxa conspecific. Characters used by Kolbe (1892) to discriminate H. celebensis from H. javanus (length of antennomeres) are not consistant when numerous specimens are examined. So I conclude that Hoplopisthius celebensis Kolbe, 1892 = H. trichemerus Senna, 1892, n. syn., H. javanus having already been placed in synonym with H. trichemerus by Senna (1893b).
