Kinetics and Mechanism of Osmium( VIII)-catalysed Oxidation of Selenium( IV) by Periodate

The reactioo is first order in oxidant and catalyst and zero order in substrate. The rate decreases with increase in [OH-] and increases with increase in ionic strength. Ea and \(\bigtriangleup\)S\(\mp\) are fouod to be 47.9±0.5kJ mol-1 and-33.0±1 8 JK-1 mol-1 respectively. A suitable mechanism is proposed.
