Kinetics and Mechanism of Osmium( VIII)-catalysed Oxidation of Selenium( IV) by Periodate

The reactioo is first order in oxidant and catalyst and zero order in substrate. The rate decreases with increase in [OH^-] and increases with increase in ionic strength. Ea and \(\bigtriangleup\)S^\(\mp\) are fouod to be 47.9±0.5kJ mol^-1 and-33.0±1 8 JK^-1 mol^-1 respectively. A suitable mechanism is proposed.
