Description

Chrysolina zhangi Ge et Daccordi, sp. nov.

(Figs. 7 A–F)

Diagnosis. Metallic dark green; hind wing absent; pronotum with lateral callus separated by shallow, whole length punctured depression; elytron with punctures forming irregular single striae; inner edge of epipleura with very sparse bristles; pygidium with shallow longitudinal depression medially.

Descriptions (based on holotype): Colour: Metallic dark green; two basal segments of antennae reddish brown, other segments dark brown; compound eyes, maxillae, labium, underside of body and legs dark brown.

Body length: 5.84 mm; body width: 2.88 mm. Body elongate (Fig. 7 A), moderate large; hind wing absent.

Head: Clypeus with sparse pubescence, with small and sparse punctures; frons smooth, with sparse and small punctures; coronal suture present, frontal suture absent; vertex with sparse and small punctures; compound eyes elliptic, dorso-ventral eye length: 0.24 mm, interocular distance: 1.20 mm; distance from antennal insertion to eye 0.22 mm; distance from antennal insertion to clypeus 0.11 mm; mandible with two denticles, outer surface with sparse pubescence, without punctures; third segment of maxillary palpi shorter than fourth, apex of fourth segment of maxillary palpi truncate; antennae with basal segments narrow, widening from segments 6 to 11, antennal segment (1–11) lengths (in millimeter): 0.32: 0.12: 0.16: 0.20: 0.16: 0.16: 0.16: 0.16: 0.24: 0.24: 0.32 (Fig. 7 B).

Pronotum: Length: 1.28 mm; width: 2.56 mm; lacking setigerous punctures on anterior and posterior angles; central disc of pronotum with small and sparse punctures, similar to those of head; with lateral callus separated by shallow, whole length punctured depression; punctures lateral to disc small and sparse.

Scutellum: Sub-triangular, with sparse punctures.

Elytra: Suture length: 4.48 mm; width of elytra: 3.36 mm. Elytron with punctures forming irregular single striae, sutural striae present; elytral punctures larger than those of side of pronotum; interspaces of elytra striae with small and sparse punctures, with horizontal wrinkles; inner edge of epipleura with very sparse bristles.

Legs: Femora with sparse and moderate punctures, sparse pubescence; tibiae with sparse and dense punctures, with dense pubescence apically; tarsomere 1 of male protarsus enlarged; hind tarsi entirely pubescent beneath; relative lengths of hind tarsomeres: 5>1> 3≥ 2, tarsomere 5 not ventrally toothed (Fig. 7 F).

Venter: Hypomera without punctures; setae of anterior margin of prosternum present; middle part of intercoxal prosternal process more than half width of apex; prosternum with sparse and small punctures, truncate behind, not emarginate behind; mesoventrite shorter than prosternum between coxae; metaventrite with sparse and small punctures, with sparse pubescence; metaventrite shorter than prosternum; mesepisternum, mesepimeron and metepisternum without punctures, but shagreened; abdomen with small, sparse pubescence, sparse pubescence; pygidium with arcuate apex, with shallow longitudinal depression medially.

Median lobe of aedeagus (Figs. 7 D–E): Basal part of median lobe slightly narrower than apex; curved in lateral view. Flagellum slender.

Variability. All males of the type series are very similar in size, shape and lustre except that some males are metallic dark green on dorsum. The female is slightly larger and broader, tarsomere 1 of protarsi enlarged in male, tarsomere 3 of mid- and hind tarsi of female with pubescence beneath only at ventro-lateral areas; spermatheca absent. Measurements of the paratypes are as follows: body measurements (in millimeters): body length: 5.85–6.24 mm, body width: 2.89–2.96 mm, dorso-ventral eye length: 0.16–0.24 mm, interocular distance: 1.20–1.28 mm, length of pronotum: 1.30–1.68 mm; width of pronotum 2.58–2.76 mm; suture length: 4.48–5.52 mm; width of elytra: 3.38–3.76 mm; antennae segment (1–11) length (in millimeter): 0.32–0.34: 0.16: 0.24–0.26: 0.16: 0.16: 0.16: 0.16: 0.16: 0.16: 0.24–0.26: 0.32–0.34 (Fig. 7 C).

Remarks. Members of this new species are similar to those of Chrysolina gruevi Lopatin, but they can be distinguished by the following characters: interspaces of elytra striae of the new species with horizontal wrinkles, C. gruevi without horizontal wrinkles, but convex. Also the morphology of the aedeagus is different.

Type material. Holotype: male, China: Yunnan: Deqin, Meilixueshan, 4600 m, 30 July 1982, leg. Xue-Zhong Zhang (IZAS). Paratypes: 3 males and 1 female (2 males and 1 female in IZAS, 1 male in MDc), same data as holotype.
