Description
Chironomus (Chironomus) anthracinus Zetterstedt
Chironomus anthracinus Zetterstedt, 1860: 6499.
Material examined. Lake Winnipeg light traps: 2 km off Selkirk (Horse) Island, 2 males, 7.vi. 1969. The Lake Winnipeg males have an AR of 4.90–4.95(2), 15–17(2) sensilla chaetica in apical half of ta1 of p2 and 12–14(2) in apical half of ta1 of p3.
Distribution and ecology. The species is widely distributed in the Holarctic region, In North America it is known from British Columbia, Alberta, Sakatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Wisconsin, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and California (Saether 1975 fig. 1, Oliver et al. 1990: 42, Saether & Spies 2011, Martin 2012). In North America the species appears to be more common in mesotrophic to moderately oligotrophic lakes, while in Europe it is the character-form of the profundal zone of moderately eutrophic lakes (Saether 1975: 3127). No larvae were caught in the bottom samples.
