Description

Neocompsa chiapensis sp. nov.

(Fig. 5)

Description. Head with reddish integument covered with white and sparse pubescence. Antennae reddish reach apex of elytra approximately in tip of antennomere VII.

Prothorax reddish. Pronotum with two tubercles postmedially, covered with sparse white pubescence, except in central region between tubercles. Sides of prothorax covered with white pubescence. Prosternum shiny on anterior two-thirds and pubescent in posterior third.

Elytra not pubescent in basal third and pubescent in apical two-thirds; in each one, basal third with a yellow spot, oblique, not touching margin or suture. Elytral apices obliquely truncate.

Femora reddish. Profemora with apical carina on external side. Tibiae and tarsi reddish. Ventral face of body reddish with white pubescence.

Measurements in mm, holotype male. Total length, 12.6; prothorax length, 3.2; greatest prothorax width, 1.6; elytron length, 8.1; humeral length, 2.3.

Etymology. Specific name refers to the type locality, State of Chiapas, Mexico.

Type material. Holotype male, MEXICO, Chiapas: Laguna Belgica, 17.VI 1.1991, D. Thomas & J. Burne col. (ACMS).

Remarks. N. chiapensis is similar to N. tuberosa Martins, 1970, described from Costa Rica, which also has the humeral region glabrous. It differs by larger size; male antennae longer; each elytron with only one inconspicuous yellow spot In N. tuberosa, dimensions are smaller (length, 6.8–11.2 mm); male antennae are shorter, reaching the elytral apex at the tip of antennomere VIII; each elytron has two yellowish-white spots, the anterior spot being conspicuously elevated and convex.
