Zadbimyia spinapiscis Jaschhof & Jaschhof, 2014, sp. n.

Description

Zadbimyia spinapiscis sp. n.

Figs 2 D, 22A–C

Diagnosis. This species is unmistakable for paramere processes that are reminiscent of a fish’s backbone (Fig. 22 C).

Other male characters. Body length 1.9 mm. Head (Fig. 2 D). Eye bridge 7–8 ommatidia long dorsally. Scape length 1.5 × pedicel length. With 20 flagellomeres. Fourth flagellomere (Fig. 22 B): neck as long as node, with microtrichia basally, circumfilum extremely pale, barely visible. Clypeus unsclerotized, asetose. Labrum larger than usual in Zadbimyia. Maxillary protuberance prolonged. Palpus 2-segmented, second segment longer than first, setae very sparse. Terminalia. Gonocoxites (Fig. 22 A): ventral emargination large, broadly V-shaped, with broad pigmented collar. Gonostylus slender, evenly, strongly curved, markedly tapered toward apex (Fig. 22 A). Ejaculatory apodeme slightly shorter than parameres, apically tapered (Fig. 22 C). Parameres (Fig. 22 C): basal portion subrectangular, processes with 12–14 spinelike lateral extensions pointing laterad, apex with short, sclerotized process.

Remarks. A specimen from Zurquí, listed separately below, is tentatively assigned to this species. It is smaller (1.4 mm); the ejaculatory apodeme is truncate apically; the paramere processes have fewer (6–7) lateral extensions; and the gonostylus is possibly more strongly curved.

Etymology. The species name spinapiscis, a noun in apposition, is the Latin word for the backbone of fish, in reference to the unusual paramere processes.
