Chelon melinopterus (Valenciennes in Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1836) —Giantscale mullet STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on specimens photographed by W.-J. Chen on Madang Market.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. South and East Africa east to Tuamotu and Marquesas islands, north to Philippines, south to New Caledonia and Austral Islands. Found in shallow coastal waters, entering lagoons, estuaries and rivers, 0– 3 m. Freshwater, transitional water and marine.

Crenimugil heterocheilos (Bleeker, 1855) —Half fringelip mullet

STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on AMS and WAM material (AMS I.16668-010; WAM P.29596-013).

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Indonesia and Philippines to Vanuatu, north to southern Japan, south to New Caledonia. Found in shallow coastal waters, entering lagoons, estuaries and rivers, 0– 3 m. Freshwater, transitional water and marine.

Ellochelon vaigiensis (Quoy & Gaimard, 1825) —Squaretail mullet, yellowtail mullet.

STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang as Mugil vaigiensis by Duncker & Mohr (1926: 131). DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. East Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Marshall, Gambier and Marquesas islands, north to southern Japan, south to Shark Bay (Western Australia), New South Wales (Australia), New Caledonia and Rapa. Found in shallow coastal waters, entering lagoons, estuaries and rivers, 0– 3 m. Freshwater, transitional water and marine.

Moolgarda buchanani (Bleeker, 1854) —Bluetail mullet

STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on AMS and WAM material (AMS I.16662-002, I.16669-011, I.16670-026, I.16670-030; WAM P.27411-010).

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. South and East Africa east to Mariana and Caroline islands, north to southern Japan, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. Found in shallow coastal waters, entering lagoons, estuaries and rivers, 0– 3 m. Freshwater, transitional water and marine.

Moolgarda engeli (Bleeker, 1858) —Kanda mullet

STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang as Mugil engeli by Kailola (1975: 180). Specimens photographed at St. CTR 26. AMS and KFRS material.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. East Africa east to Marquesas and Tuamotu islands, north to Yaeyama Islands, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia, 0– 3 m. Transitional water and marine.

Moolgarda perusii (Valenciennes in Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1836) —Longfinned mullet STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on a specimen collected by W.-J. Chen on Madang Market. NTUM material (NTUM 10008).

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. East Africa east to Mariana and Solomon islands, north to Taiwan. Found in shallow coastal waters, entering lagoons and estuaries, 0– 3 m. Transitional water and marine.

Moolgarda seheli (Forsskål in Niebuhr, 1775) —Bluespot mullet

STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang as Valamugil seheli by Parenti & Allen (1991: 318); photographed by A. Berberian. AMS and CAS material.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Red Sea, East Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Hawaiian and Marquesas islands, north to southern Japan, south to Derby (Western Australia) and Norfolk Island. Found in shallow coastal waters, entering lagoons, estuaries and rivers, 0– 3 m. Freshwater, transitional water and marine.

Mugil cephalus Linnaeus, 1758 —Flathead grey mullet

STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on AMS material (AMS I.19692-008). DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Worldwide in tropical and temperate seas. Coastal, often entering estuaries, rivers and streams, 0–10. Freshwater, transitional water and marine.

Paramugil parmatus (Cantor, 1849) —Broad-mouthed mullet

STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang as Liza oligolepis by Herre (1933: 12). DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. South Africa, Seychelles and Sri Lanka east to Fiji, north to Philippines, south to northern Australia. Found in shallow coastal waters, entering lagoons, estuaries and rivers, 0– 3 m. Freshwater, transitional water and marine.

Rhinomugil nasutus (Vis, 1883) —Shark mullet

STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang by Herre (1933: 12).

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Northern Australia and New Guinea. Found in shallow coastal waters, entering lagoons, estuaries and rivers, 0– 3 m. Freshwater, transitional water and marine.
