Latheticomyia sp.

One female specimen appears to be close to L. infumata Wheeler. It agrees with most of the description and the figures of L. infumata described only from female specimens, but differs in the size of the yellow triangular spot on the scutum, which is shorter. Since L. infumata was described from Nicaragua, and the specimen in question is from Peru, it is quite possible that they are different species. It also appears to be close to L. xantha sp. nov., but differs in the size of the yellow triangular spot on the scutum (longer in L. xantha sp. nov.) and the coloration of the legs, in that the fore tibia of this female is entirely yellow, the mid femur is yellow with the base brown and the hind femur is mainly brown with a yellow spot medially. In L. xantha sp. nov., described only from male specimens, the fore tibia has the basal half yellow and the distal half dark brown, the mid femur is entirely yellow and the hind femur is entirely brown. There are only two species described from male and female specimens in Latheticomyia, L. lineata Wheeler and L. tricolor Wheeler, and both sexes have the same general appearance and because this specimen do not fit quite well neither discussed species above (L. infumata and L. xantha sp. nov.) we prefer to leave it as unidentified.
