Description

Johnsonomyia serrata Jaschhof sp. nov.

Fig. 14A–D

Diagnosis. Male genitalic structures characteristic of J. serrata (Fig. A) are the weakly sclerotized, broadly with trapezoid broadly tegmen rounded with apex blunt (↓ apex) and and small finely, slightly serrate curved edges tooth apicolaterally; and the long (↓);, the narrow thick ejaculatory, parallel-sided apodeme gonostylus that is

unmodified apically and poorly sclerotized basally. Similar structures are present in several unnamed Johnsonomyia from Costa Rica, which differ from each other and from J. serrata mainly in the shape of the gonostylus, the outline of the gonostylar tooth, and in non-genitalic characters. Females of J. serrata are unknown.

Other male characters. Body length 3.2 mm. Head. Postgenal setae about 15, clustered. Eye bridge 7–8 ommatidia long dorsally. Scape and pedicel concolorous with flagellum, both unsetose. Neck of fourth flagellomere (Fig. C) 1.2 times longer than node; node with short hair-like translucent sensilla below the subbasal whorl of setae, a dense crenulate whorl medially, microtrichia only basally. Palpus (Fig. B) 1.2 times longer than head height, 4 segments, all segments with long hair-shaped translucent sensilla, fourth segment longest. Wing length 2.8 mm (Fig. D). Length / width 2.6. Rs darkly pigmented. Legs with narrow scales in addition to setae. Tarsi slightly lighter than other segments. Claws slightly bent, untoothed. Empodia vestigial. Genitalia (Fig. A). Gonocoxae: ventral emargination deep, broadly U-shaped, in basal half occupied by weak membrane; ventral bridge unsetose; anterior processes of apodemes as long as distance separating them. Gonostylus twice as long as wide.

Etymology. The species epithet, serrata, is a Latin adjective meaning serrate, with reference to the tegminal apex.

Type material. Holotype. Male, Republic of South Africa, KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, Karkloof Nature Reserve, in mistbelt forest, 1,325 m, 28 Sep.–24 Nov. 2005, Malaise trap, M. Mostovski (in NMSA). Paratype. Male, same data as the holotype (in NMSA).
