Lophobothea barclayi Monné & Monné & Botero 2017, sp. nov.

Description

Lophobothea barclayi sp. nov.

(Figs. 7–8)

Male. Integument black, pubescence predominantly white, densely covering head, basal third of antennomeres III– XI, sides of prothorax (including an oblique longitudinal stripe of brownish pubescence), pronotum with large longitudinal stripe on each side of midline and rounded lateral spot on each side in anterior third. In elytra, white pubescence arranged as follows: large patch from humeri posteriorly in anterior third, elongated line on each side of suture in basal third, two transverse stripes composed of several rounded patches, the anterior antemedian and the posterior postmedian, and transverse stripe at apex.

Lower eye lobes, height less than 0.8 height of genae; upper eye lobes well separated, distance between them three times width of upper lobe. Antennae surpassing elytral apices by about four antennomeres, scape slightly dilated at distal third.

Prothorax with obtuse protuberance at beginning of basal third, slightly constricted behind; punctuation of pronotum restricted to basal row of punctures. Prosternal process slightly narrowed in middle, width equal to ¾ of procoxal cavity. Mesosternal process 1.3 times wider than mesocoxal cavity. Scutellum blackish, broadly rounded behind. Elytra with sides parallel from base to apex, extremities emarginate, sutural angle acute, outer angle projected in acute spine. Humeri slightly projected in rhomboid protuberance, anteriorly oblique. Lateral carina well marked from base to distal third. Elytral surface with sparse punctures, mostly restricted to brownish pubescence areas.

Femora moderately clavate. Metatarsomere I as long as II–III together.

Apical margin of urotergite V semicircularly emarginate; urosternite V narrowing slightly to extremity, apical margin emarginate, lateral angles produced in acute spine.

Measurements (mm). Holotype male. Total length, 8.5; prothorax length, 1.5; prothorax width, 2.5; elytral length, 6.5; humeral width, 3.0.

Etymology. The species is dedicated to our friend Maxwell Barclay, for his kindness during a visit by two of the authors to the BMNH.

Type material. Holotype male, Ecuador, Morona-Santiago: Cord. de Cutucú, 6 km E of Macas, 1100 m, 17.V.1981, M. Cooper col. (BMNH).

Remarks. Lophobothea barclayi sp. nov. can be easily distinguished by the mostly white pubescence, by the patches on the pronotum and elytra, and by the comparatively small dimensions.
