Lobogonodes shiushioui Wu & Chang 2018, sp. nov.

Description

Lobogonodes shiushioui sp. nov.

(Figs 3, 4, 17, 25, 40)

Type material. Holotype. ♂, TAIWAN, Miaoli County, Guanwu, 2000 m, 10–VII–2015, leg. H. Y. Huang & P. H. Chen, preserved in TFRI (Fig. 3); paratype. TAIWAN. 1♂, Nantou County, Shihshan, 2500 m, 13–V–2011, leg. S. Wu & W. C. Chang (TFRI) (Fig. 4)

Diagnosis. The new species can be distinguished from the Japanese endemic L. erectaria (Figs 5, 6, 18, 26, 33, 41) by the presence of distinct, large black patch at the central part of forewing between costa and M2; the dentate postmedial line tinged with orange between postmedial and submarginal lines rather than linear tinged with ochreous between two lines; the stouter uncus; the wider valva; the smaller patch of cornuti.

Description. Adult (Figs 3, 4) Forewing length 10–11 mm in males (n= 2). Head, thorax and abdomen ochreous. Forewing broad, costal margin slightly convex, apex protruded, outer margin slight convex, M1 stalked with R2-5, background coloration ochreous, central part between costa and M2, as well as submarginal part between costa and R5 tinged with black, respectively, subbasal part having 3 dense, fine, parallel white lines, discoidal spot oblique, elliptical, black with white margin, subsequently one white circular white spot arranging between M stalk and one black spot with white margin locating near inner margin, postmedial line white, dentate, broken by veins, shading with black at outside, submarginal line parallel with postmarginal line but linear, broken by veins, region between postmedial and submarginal line tinged with orange, marginal line fine, black, marginal scales ochreous with end of veins tinged with black; long hair pencil absent under the forewing. Hindwing broad, discoidal dot small, black, medial part having three dense, light ochreous lines, postmedial and submarginal lines white, tinged orange at intermediate region, marginal line and marginal scales as for forewing. Male genitalia (Fig. 17, 25) – typical of congeneric species, uncus curved, slender but stout toward apex, subscaphium sclerotized, juxta and saccus U-shaped, saccus with a pair of long processes projecting anteriorly, anellus lobe short, round, anellus lobe hair moderate in length toward tegumen tip, valva gradually broader toward distal part, margin of apical part blunt, aedeagus 1.3X longer than valva, vesica membranous with a thin patch of cornutus at medial part longitudinally.

Distribution and bionomics. This species, endemic to Taiwan, is very rare and currently known from only two specimens collected in mid-elevation broad-leaved forests. The adults occur in May and July.

Etymology. The specific name of the new species is dedicated to the son, Shiu-Shiou Wu, of the coauthor. "Shiu" stands for warm sunshine and "Shiou" stands for mountains in Mandarin, together reflecting the color patterns and habitat in the mountains of the new species.
