In 1800, Alessandro Volta developed the first voltaic cell. This battery consists of zinc and silver plates that are stacked on top of each other. Among these plates, there are cardboards dipped in salt water. Since there was no voltmeter at the time and no idea of electric current due to the movement of electrons, Volta had to find another way to measure battery power. This strange way was the amount of shock from the battery power. He found that the more metal plates there were, the more powerful the shock would be, and a device with 20 metal plates would produce a painful shock. Electrochemistry is an important application in modern science and technology that can produce important industrial chemicals such as aluminum and pure copper for the production of electrical wires, coating metal surfaces using electrochemical processes, metal plating and metal refining. Electrochemical cells are of great environmental importance in the preparation of fuel cells in addition to high efficiency. In the following, we will get acquainted with the principles of electrochemical cell design and its applications.
