Description
Electrochemistry is a branch of physical chemistry that studies the relationship between electricity - as a quantitative and measurable phenomenon - and chemical change and the effect of the two on each other. These reactions involve the movement of electrical charges between an electrode and an analyte. Thus, electrochemistry is related to the relationship between electrical energy and chemical change. We have an electrochemical reaction when a chemical change occurs due to an external current. This external current can be observed in electrolysis or the electric current is created by a spontaneous chemical reaction, which is seen in batteries. Chemical reactions in which electrons are transferred directly between molecules or atoms are called redox reactions. In general, electrochemistry describes general reactions in which redox reactions take place separately, but these reactions are connected by an external circuit and an electrolyte between them.
