The title complex ilimeric tetraquadipyridinioacatateytterbium perchlorate ([Yb{C5H5NCH2COO)2.4(H2O)]2.(ClO4)6) has been prepared by reacting ytterbium perchlorate with pyridine betaine (pyridinioacetate) in warm water and its X-ray crystal structure has been determined. The ytterbium(III) ion is surrounded by four carboxylato O atoms and four aqua-ligands in an eight-coordinate approximate dodecahedral arrangement. The average Yb-O (aqua), Yb-O (carboxylato) bond distances are 2.366(3) and 2.283{3) \(\mathring{A}\) respectively.
