Manuscript received 4 April 1994, revised 26 May 1995, accepted 20 June 1995

The pyrimidothienoquinoxaline (2a; R = OH), derived from 1 and formamide, is thionated and chlorinated to 2b (R = SH) and 2f (R =CI) respectively. Treatment of 2f with hydrazine produces 2j (R = NHNH2), the latter giving 3a (R = SH) with carbon disulphide, 3c (R = CH2CO2Et) with diethyl malonate, and 4 with nitrous acid. Antibacterial and antifungal activities of some of the products have been assessed.
