Description
EUR_OXY_SPH_Expert_system_file is an expert system for automatic classification of European bog vegetation plots of Oxycocco-Sphagnetea class. The expert system allows classification of new vegetation plots to seven alliances (Ericion tetralicis, Oxycocco-Ericion tetralicis, Erico mackaianae-Sphagnion papillosi, Oxycocco microcarpi-Empetrion hermaphroditi, Sphagnion medii, Rubo chamaemori-Dicranion elongati, Sphagno baltici-Trichophorion cespitosi).
In short: The Oxycocco-Sphagnetea class is defined on the basis of the ratio between the sum of square-root transformed percentage covers of 'Bog species' (groups ##D +01 Bog-species-vascular, ##D +02 Bog-species-bryophytes), and the sum of square-root transformed percentage covers of species occurring in bog hollows and species occurring out of the bog habitat (groups ##D +01 Vascular_negative, ##D +02 Bryophytes_negative). Similarly, for classification of a plot to an alliance, the plot must contain a greater proportion of discriminating species group of a certain alliance than that of other alliances. Compliance with more stringent conditions will allow direct classification (symbol ! after alliance name), while other plots will be assigned only on the basis of the result given by the ratio of species covers (symbol ? after alliance name). This makes it possible to classify all plots to alliances. The use of discriminating species groups excludes the possibility of classifying a vegetation-plot record in more than one group at the same hierarchical level.
Codes of alliances after automatic expert system classification:
01_A! = Ericion tetralicis
01_B! = Oxycocco-Ericion tetralicis
01_C! = Erico mackaianae-Sphagnion papillosi
02_A! = Oxycocco microcarpi-Empetrion hermaphroditi
02_B! = Sphagnion medii
02_C! = Rubo chamaemori-Dicranion elongati
02_D! = Sphagno baltici-Trichophorion cespitosi
The principles of the expert system follow the methods described by Chytrý et al. (2020) .
The classification of a set of vegetation plots can be run in the JUICE program (Tichý 2002; https://www.sci.muni.cz/botany/juice/), and should be also in TURBOVEG 3 program (Hennekens 2015) and an R script developed by H. Bruelheide et al. (2021).
The expert system is described and used for an article: Classification of European bog vegetation of the Oxycocco-Sphagnetea class, submitted to Applied Vegetation Science journal.
