Description

Hedychridium mediocrum Linsenmaier, 1987

(Fig. 47A–47F)

Hedychridium (Hedychridium) mediocrum Linsenmaier, 1987: 142 (descr.).

Hedychridium mediocrate Kimsey in Kimsey & Bohart 1991: 199. Unnecessary replacement name for Hedychridium mediocrum Linsenmaier, 1987.

Hedychridium insulare mediocrum: Arens 2010: 407 (roseum group).

Type locality. Switzerland: “ ♂ Type Wallis, Coll. m. - Verbreitung mehr in Mitteleuropa (auch im Osten) [=more spread in Central Europe (also in the East)], im Süden seltener als scutellare T, so in Spanien, S. France, Bulgaria; I did not see any specimen from Italy or Sicily ”.

Holotype, ♂: Wallis B 550m 9.6.56 Linsenmaier // ♂ Type Hedychridium Ab. mediocrum Lins. det. Linsenmaier 86 // Hedychridiuminsulare lampadum Lins. det. W. Arens 2006 // NML _ ENT GBIF _ Chr0011197.

Remarks. Linsenmaier (1959a) described Hedychridium mediocre based on specimens from Spain, southern France, Italy, and Sicily. At the same time, he reported H. scutellare from southwestern Switzerland, southern France, Spain and Hungary. Subsequently, Linsenmaier (1987) realised that he inverted the identification of the two species and that H. mediocre is the junior synonym of H. scutellare. Therefore, he corrected his earlier (1959a) interpretation, and the species previously interpreted as H. scutellare turned out to be still undescribed. Linsenmaier (1987), with a choice that is at least questionable, described this species with the name H. mediocrum. This name, as it was easy to foresee, proved to be a source of further confusion, as it was mistakenly considered junior homonym of H. mediocre by Kimsey & Bohart (1991), who replaced H. mediocrum with H. mediocrate Kimsey. However, based on the rules of the International Nomenclature Code, the name H. mediocrum is valid, as it is evidently not a wrong spelling of mediocre, but the explicit intention of providing a new name, a Latin adjective of the first class rather than the second.
