Poster presented at ASLO 2015 (Granada, Spain). It communicates data about enzymatic extracellular activities in the global ocean obtained in the Malaspina 2010 Circumnavegation Expedition.

The objectives of the work were to identify biogeographical patterns of distribution of leucine-aminopeptidase, alkaline phosphatase, b-glucosidase and chitinase extracellular activities in the global ocean, and to gain knowledge about the high potential EEA in the deep global ocean.

The results indicate different biogeographical patterns of extracellular enzyme activity and discrete hot-spots of surface activity in the global ocean.  In addition, high evidence suggests the transport of active dissolved enzymes downwards along the water column, which would explain the high enzymatic extracellular activities detected in deep waters despite the low prokaryiotic production rates and the extremely low bacterial growth efficiencies observed.
