Physical and Biochemical studies of Citrus macroptera Mont. - an endangered Citrus species from Mizoram, India
Description
Mizoram is situated in North Eastern part of India blessed with a rich diversity of fruit crops, among which a semi wild species of Citrus called Citrus macroptera locally known as Hatkora is found in plenty and used by the local tribes for treatment of stomach ailments. In Mizoram, the commercial cultivation of Hatkora is confined mainly in Kolasib, Aizawl, Lunglei, Mamit, and Serchhip district where the elevation and agro-climatic condition are lower and warmer which is suitable for its growth. The present investigation was conducted at Mizoram University, Tanhril, Mizoram to study the physical and biochemical parameters of Hatkora. Fifteen different accessions of Hatkora were collected from five districts of Mizoram for the study. Significant differences were observed among the accessions with respect to physical and biochemical parameters of the fruits with respect to TSS, sugars, titratable acidity, ascorbic acid content, juice pH and antioxidant activity. The antioxidant activity indicates the health benefits of Hatkora which makes it a potential fruit crop for genetic improvement programme.
