Communicated Scholarship and Experiential Knowledge Sharing through Fermentology

Fermentology is a series of mini-lectures led by leading scientists, authors, and researchers -- all focusing on the history and science of the foods we have at home. While the original modality of Fermentology existed through shareable videos, now we strive to increase the accessibility and readability of these mini-lectures by constructing enriched versions of these talks.

The enriched talks begin with transcripts from the Fermentology webinars and are then threaded with media, interactive elements, and links to other resources, morphing from a video lecture to a web-primary text for increased longevity, accessibility, and engagement. The goal was to extend and enhance the lectures, invite interested viewers to become readers, and engage participants in the ideas presented -- prioritizing communicated scholarship as a process for “modulating, re-presenting, and then amplifying academic knowledge in non-academic modes” (Vandegrift, 2021). We see this knowledge mobilization and sharing as an experimental form of open publishing, something in the middle of journalism, archival research, digital and public scholarship.
