Microwave-induced racemic and asymmetric synthesis of trans acetoxy β-lactams is performed following a nucleophilic substitution reaction of cis 3-mesyl β-lactams with sodium acetate. This method is applicable to obtain a few unusual stereodefined trans acetoxy β-lactams.
