Zosterodasys hisioensis (Ozaki & Yagiu, 1941) Jankowski 2007

Description

Zosterodasys hisioensis (Ozaki & Yagiu, 1941) Jankowski, 2007

(Figs 9 A, B)

Chilodontopsis hisioensis Ozaki & Yagiu, 1941: 171, Pl. II fig. 4. Zosterodasys hisioensis – Jankowski 2007: 729 (combining author). Zosterodasys texensis Alekperov et al., 2007 /8: 111, fig. 6B.

Diagnosis. Size about 150–230 × 55–75 µm in vivo. Body shape obovate to elliptical with left margin anteriorly slightly projecting. Macronucleus ellipsoidal with a single globular micronucleus. One large posterior contractile vacuole accompanied by 4–5 small ones. About 80 ciliary rows: 45–47 ventral and 30–36 dorsal. Synhymenium incompletely encircles cell. On average 19 (16–22) nematodesmal rods. Marine.

Type locality. Under cyanobacterial layer in saltwater ditches near the Onomiti Channel, Japan.

Type material. Deposition of type material not mentioned by Ozaki & Yagiu (1941). Alekperov et al. (2007/8) deposited one holotype and two paratype slides with protargol impregnated specimens of Z. texensis in the Institute of Zoology, NAS of Azerbaijan, Baku City.

Etymology. Not given in the original description. We do not know the derivation of “ hisioensis ” but suppose that it is a Latinized Japanese place name.

Remarks. We suggest to synonymize Z. texensis with Z. hisioensis because diagnostic features of these two species are similar or overlap considerably. This concerns the body shape and size (150–200 × 70–75 µm in Z. hisioensis and 180–230 × 55–65 µm in Z. texensis), the nuclear and contractile vacuole apparatus as well as the number of the nematodesmal rods (16 in Z. hisioensis and 18–22 in Z. texensis). The number of the ciliary rows was not studied in Z. hisioensis by Ozaki & Yagiu (1941). Alekperov et al. (2007/8) discovered Z. texensis on aquatic plants in shallow bays of the Mexican Gulf.
