Description
Plectorhinchus picus (Cuvier in Guérin-Méneville 1828) —Spotted sweetlips
Status at New Ireland. New record, based on specimens observed at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005 by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey, and by Barry C. Russell on 28 June 2014; a video of a specimen taken at Tungelo Island, off southeastern New Hanover, at 3–46 m depth, St. KR 104, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Seychelles and Mascarenes east to Society Islands, north to southern Japan, south to Lord Howe Island and Rapa. Found in lagoon and seaward coral reefs, adults usually resting during the day under coral heads or in caves, active at night, juveniles in shallow lagoons, 1–50 m depth. Marine.
