Tracing the accretion-ejection link at young stars through time

Description

High-resolution infrared observations allow us to probe regions close to young stars, normally obscured by the surrounding envelope. While a young star is actively accreting material from the disk onto the star, jets and outflows remove mass from the system. The connection between accretion and ejection is relevant for the final star and disk mass, and therefore has implications for planet formation. We probe this connection between the two processes using X-Shooter spectra of the infrared He I 1 micron line in a large sample of young stars in the Lupus and Upper Scorpius star forming regions. The He I line traces both accretion and ejection in the innermost regions close to the star, therefore allowing us to connect the accretion and ejection properties of the system to stellar properties and to the evolutionary stage of the star.
