Impact Of ASUU Strike on Psychosocial Development of Academic Staff in South-East Zone of Nigerian Universities

ASUU strike no doubt wheel tremendous influence on the psycho-social development of academic staff in Nigerian universities as a result of the measures often taken by the Government at eruption of strikes ranging from termination of appointment of some ASUU leaders and starvation of employees (non-payment and reduction of salaries).This study investigated the impacts of ASUU strike on the psycho-social development of academic staff in Nigerian universities using ex-post-facto research design. From a population of 12,587 academic staff in 5 Federal Government owned universities in South-East Zone of Nigeria, 1000 subjects were selected for the study using simple random sampling technique. An instrument of 25 items titled “IASPSDAS” was used for data collection. The instrument was validated by specialists in education. Reliability of the instrument was determined using Cronbach Alpha and an alpha coefficient of 0.78 was obtained. Research questions were answered using frequencies and mean. Result revealed that ASUU strike is associated with frustration, withdrawn behaviours, low self-esteem, aggression, deviant behaviours and negative self-concept among others. The researchers recommended that the Federal Government should give education due priority and also honestly (in practical terms) implement all sections on tertiary education as stipulated in her National Policy on Education document among others.
