Description

Arianops alticola Barr

Material examined (n 5 1). / USA: NC, Transylvania Co., 0.3 mi W Devils Cthse. [Devils Courthouse, a rock outcrop], 5430 ft., 6-VIII-1970 / u. rocks, T. C. Barr & H. R. Steeves / 1 ♀. Deposited Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago, IL.

Comments. This female is part of a series of specimens that Barr (1974, p. 22) discussed, but did not include in his type series. I mention it here because of an unusual, dried, sac-like structure that extends from the abdomen of the specimen (Fig. 41). I believe this is the internal sac of a male that had previously mated with this female. If this interpretation is correct, the event could represent an occasional, accidental occurrence. But, it might be a normal consequence of mating, in which case, male and female members of this species probably only mate once in their lifetime, and the detached internal sac might function as a post-mating reproductive barrier (i.e., ‘‘mating plug’’ sensu Fromhage and Schneider 2006).
